How many times has health been over looked in organisations? Why is it that safety is drilled into us until the cows come home but health does not ever seem to get mentioned?

There is more and more research to show that a healthy workforce bears a productive one such as evidence from the Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO). They report that  “more than 90 percent of business leaders say that employee wellness has a direct effect on employee productivity and performance.” Anyone who think that workplace health programmes are just an added cost, I challenge you to dismiss the results of this study! Another recent study looked in to 2 concepts of business; performance and productivity. They found that the majority of business leaders reported that those were the 2 that were the top organisational priorities most affected by the health and wellness of their employees. Therefore, good health of employees = increased performance and productivity.

With obesity and related diseases such as heart disease and type2 diabetes increasing at an alarming rate, absenteeism will be directly affected. Not only is absenteeism a problem but also “presenteeism”.  This is when an employee turns up for work but not performing to one’s best ability and has been reported to cost organisations more than absenteeism. Dr David Chenoweth, author of Wellness Strategies to Improve Employee Health, Performance and the Bottom Line, quotes that this is down to “modifiable risk factors such as excess weight, sedentary lifestyles, smoking and poor diet. However, implementing effective wellness programs can reduce both absenteeism and presenteeism, leading to healthier employees and a healthier bottom line.”
