2015 is well and truly almost over with and we would love to hear what you’ve achieved this year? Did you make plenty of resolutions back at the start of the year? Did you throw yourself into them 100% in January but before you knew it they were long forgotten?

If this does sound like you, then don’t worry – you are very much not alone. So many people, probably after over-indulging during the festivities, make very strict, full-on and often unreasonable demands of themselves to be healthier/lose weight/get more active/quit smoking. What is even more astounding – so many people will choose to do all of the this at one time! Although all of these goals will have great impact on your health and potential life longevity it may have a big negative impact to your short term health. Change is a very difficult process and the longer you have behaved in a certain way the harder it may be to act for the better. By ‘doing too much too fast’ you can open yourself to the exposure of negative thinking, stress and low mood – all of which in most scenarios lead you back to the unhelpful behaviour you were trying to change in the first place.

So here at Global Health Promotions we aren’t too sure what we think about  big and bold New Year Resolutions, unless that resolution is to:

Be happier than yesterday. Be better than yesterday.

There is no point comparing yourself to your friends or the media or to that amazing girl at the gym. What we think you should focus on is you. How can you make you better? How can you make your life better? These are things that you should be questioning each and everyday – not just January 1st. Too often we all wish our ‘everyday’ days away looking forward to that weekend, that holiday or that special occasion. Everyday is special, and everyday holds great potential for you to be the best possible version of you, for you to be happy, for you to have a great time. Do you want to know who it is that controls all of those wonderful things?

YOU.

That’s right! You are the only person that can control how your life turns out. And you can do it all by checking in with yourself and your thoughts. By looking after your mind, the way you think, the way you speak to yourself can have a huge impact on your own day-to-day well-being and happiness. Don’t worry though, I know what you might be thinking: ‘but if only I was slimmer, or had more money, or a better boss… everything would be okay.’ That’s maybe true, external factors you cannot control though. So what you need to start doing is looking at how you can change all of those things for the better using what is within your own control? Ask for more responsibility, suggest helpful changes within the workforce that may benefit everyone, be mindful of what you’re eating.
